Lent Prayer Topic for Day #30

Meet the Needs of Our Community

My personal devotions took me this morning to Mark 14:1-11.  In this section we read about an unnamed woman who anoints Jesus’ body with costly perfume.  While some looked with disgust at the woman, Jesus said she had done it in preparation for His burial.  The devotion then asked the question whether we see ourselves as caring for the Body of Christ – that is, the body of those who call upon Him in faith?  This question can also be extended to ask whether we are caring for the “body” of our community.  Do we know what our community needs? Are we endeavoring to meet those needs?  Are we even interested?  We invite you today to pray for our Lord to build within the SBL community of faith 1) the desire to know the needs of our community and 2) work to meet those needs with Christ’s love.

Lent Prayer Topic for Day #29

Political Atmosphere of Our Nation

According to Romans 13, God has established the governing and ruling authorities over us.  He may not like everything every politician does (and I’d bet the “pleased ratio” is probably less than 50% – of any politician of any party) but that doesn’t detract from the facts of Romans 13.  We usually call God’s authority of the government as His “left hand” (God working through His Church – sharing the Gospel, bringing Baptism and the Lord’s Supper to His people, forgiving sins, etc. – as God’s “right hand”).  Pray today that the political atmosphere of our nation would improve, that work would get done, the peace is maintained and people have the ability to work and give praise to God through their employment.

PS – My apologies this is a day late….hopefully not a dollar (or prayer) short!

Prayer Topic for the Fifth Sunday in Lent

Today’s Gospel Reading contains this zinger:  “whoever would be great among you must be your servant.”  Ouch!  Kind of reminds me of the old joke, “I’m proud of my humility.”

But all joking aside, this line gives way to this prayer thought for today:  pray for our SBL family to share the message of salvation in Jesus Christ.  This is why we are here.  We are not called to be a mutual-admiration society.  We are not called to provide a comfy place for us to hid away from society’s challenges.  Heaven’s no!  If we truly want to be great, if we truly want to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, then we begin by praying for us to have opportunities to share the message of salvation in Jesus.

Lent Prayer Topic for Day #28

Faithful Witness of SBL Family

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus that is all they talk about in church! Even though a tongue-in- cheek simplification, a wonderful criticism. Thank God today that Jesus, and the Gospel message is proclaimed loud and clear in worship. Pray that this continues to be true, but also that the good news of salvation is carried out by each of us individually. Pray that God uses you, and all of the members of our church to be faithful witnesses of our Savior Jesus Christ. It would be great to hear, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus that is all (put your name here) can talk about!” May we be so criticized!
